Young Historic Interpreters

Volunteers between the pages of 8 and 14 help visitors learn about 18th-century life by living it!

Young Historic Interpreters participate in monthly meetings, during which the exclusive group receives hands-on training about food, games, and even politics of the past. They also learn how to speak with the public and give fun tours.  They should also plan to participate in a number of weekend programs during the school year and week days in the summer.

New volunteers are accepted in January and August.

Internships


Are you looking for experience in the museum field?  Do you love history?  Are you interested in applying your library and archives skills?  Are you excited about teaching in an informal learning setting?

In the kitchen Gunston Hall offers internships in the following areas:

All interns gain real-life skills by becoming a part of the team at a vibrant history museum.

Students majoring in history, education, political science, American studies, anthropology, public history, museum studies, library science, archival science, communications, or a related field are a good match for these internships. Interns must enjoy working with people, understand historical methods, have excellent interpersonal skills, have strong writing skills, and be able to work in teams and independently.

Marbling Paper Education Interns
Education interns bring history to life for visitors of all ages by contributing to school programs, public programs, and exhibitions.  

Education activities at Gunston Hall introduce visitors to historical content in fun and engaging ways.  Education interns help develop activities for family programs, work with middle and high school volunteers, contribute to program evaluation, create hands-on exhibition elements, publicize public programs and special events, lead activities on special program days, support teacher workshop activities, and assist with tours.

Collections Management Interns
Collections management interns contribute to the care and preservation of historical objects.  Activities include updating records in PastPerfect, cataloging new acquisitions, inventorying items, digitizing images of collections items, assisting with environmental monitoring, and supporting exhibitions work.
Rare Book
Library and Archives Interns
Library and archives interns support research activities at Gunston Hall by helping make the institution’s materials more accessible.

The library and archives at Gunston Hall serve as a resource for the site’s paid and unpaid staff, as well as outside researchers.  Library and archives interns assist researchers, conduct their own research to benefit exhibitions and public programs, create finding aids, digitize materials, and assist with a variety of other projects that preserve and increase access to the archival and library collections.    

Social Media Interns
Social Media interns use sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to help increase awareness of and interest in George Mason and his ideas.  They also use social media platforms to help publicize upcoming events and share news about Gunston Hall.
